The challenge

The challenge

Moving to Datadog from tools like Grafana is quick to start and easy to get wrong in the detail. APM, alert routing and cost control all depend on consistent tagging first. With Opsgenie reaching end of support in April 2027 and APM on its roadmap, the company chose an expert review of its Datadog setup, to put the foundations in place before rolling out more.

What we did

What we did

  • Reviewed the Datadog setup end to end, including readiness for APM, and recorded what was already working well.
  • Made consistent tagging the first priority, with a service naming plan agreed before APM so nothing needs reworking later.
  • Recommended alerting built as code, with clear team ownership, routing and runbooks as standard.
  • Showed how to get more from logs while balancing cost and signal.
  • Delivered quick wins and a prioritised backlog, in an order that lets APM deliver value from day one.

The outcome

The outcome

  • A clear, ordered plan, with quick wins the team could pick up straight away.
  • A platform team now fixing tagging at source, in the shared code every team's services build on.
  • A decision to bring alerting into Datadog as the Opsgenie replacement, so each team's alerts reach its own on-call engineer.
  • Confirmation that the foundations were sound, so the team could build with confidence.
