An expert Datadog baseline for a team that wants to run it themselves
A software provider to the utilities sector is now building its own Datadog deployment as code, working from an expert baseline and a 30/60/90 day plan.
The challenge
Datadog gives the most value when its setup is consistent, so a trace, a log and a user session all lead back to the same service. That is hard to keep up by hand when a provider runs monitoring for many customer environments. This provider chose an independent, expert review before rolling Datadog out further, to get the baseline right and then move to automated, code-managed deployments.
What we did
- Reviewed the production Datadog setup end to end and confirmed what was already working well.
- Made consistent tagging the first priority, because cost tracking, alert routing and filtering all depend on it.
- Recommended clear ownership for every alert, with a responder and a next step.
- Showed how to connect traces, logs and user sessions into one view during an incident.
- Delivered quick wins, a prioritised backlog and a 30/60/90 day plan, and walked the engineers through it.
The outcome
- The provider's own engineers began building their Datadog deployment as code soon after the review.
- A team that now describes itself as self-sufficient on Datadog, with the report as its starting point.
- Expert confirmation of the team's own view of what to fix, so effort went straight into the work.
- A clear way to apply the same standard across every customer environment.
