An insurer's own engineers now roll out its monitoring
An Irish insurer brought its core business platforms onto Datadog through its own change control, and its engineers now extend it themselves.
The challenge
Monitoring tools are usually sold on clean, modern estates. Established insurers run something harder: Windows, Linux and AIX side by side, hardened hosts, some infrastructure run by third parties, and a change board that approves every production change. This insurer chose Datadog as its single observability platform, starting with the go-live of a new content platform, and decided its own engineers should extend it across the estate rather than depend on a partner for every rollout.
What we did
- Led the first Datadog implementation end to end, in time for the content platform's go-live.
- Agreed a least-privilege access model with the insurer's security, infrastructure and third-party teams, took it through the change board and built it into reusable deployment automation, so each new platform inherited it.
- Placed all platform access, including our own, under the insurer's single sign-on.
- Put log cost controls in place before any data was ingested.
- Ran the rollout jointly with the insurer's engineers, so the team learned it by doing it.
The outcome
- Core business platforms brought onto Datadog, with the first in full production use and the rest moving through the insurer's environments.
- The insurer's own engineers now roll Datadog out themselves, with Critical Cloud on hand for assurance.
- During a live incident, Datadog surfaced the failing call to a dependency, so the team tied the symptom to its cause and closed the incident.
- Every production change went through the insurer's change board, within its security policy.
