A secure research analytics platform on Azure for the heaviest statistical work
A UK intensive care audit and research organisation runs its research analytics on Posit in Azure, with heavy compute on demand.
The challenge
Statistical teams running long simulations need compute that bursts for days at a time and a simple way to publish reports. Connecting an analytics platform such as Posit to on-premises file shares that hold sensitive NHS data is hard, because cloud sign-in and Windows file permissions do not speak the same language. The organisation chose to move onto Posit on Azure without weakening each user's file permissions.
What we did
- Designed and built the Posit analytics and publishing platform on Azure, defined entirely as code.
- Added high-compute capacity that scales out for long simulations and back to zero when idle.
- Gave each researcher their own access to the on-premises shared drive, suited to the most sensitive NHS data.
- Built in encryption, high availability, backups and Datadog monitoring with 24x7 alerting.
- Handed over a full set of runbooks.
The outcome
- Researchers run their analysis and publish reports and apps on one platform, in production since summer 2026.
- Heavy compute on demand for multi-day simulations, with no cost for idle capacity.
- Each user sees only the files they are allowed to see, in line with NHS England policy.
- A platform proven to rebuild from code onto its existing data.
